Saskatoon tops Post 334 in a ‘WBG’
The Saskatoon Giants ended Post 334′s five-game winning streak Saturday afternoon in the second round of the Jamestown tournament, winning a wooden bat game 5-3.
Both teams had seven hits in the game, but one of Saskatoon’s hit was a grand slam home run in the third inning just over Jamestown’s notorious 300-foot, 39-foot high wall in right field. It gave Saskatoon a 4-0 lead at the time, which Post 334 cut back to 4-3 in the sixth inning with a three-run rally.
Post 334 nearly tied the game in the sixth when Brandon Flippen doubled home one run, then with two out designated hitter Ian Andrews — with two runners on base — drilled a shot off the wall 360 feet away in left center field, just two feet from going out for a three-run homer.
Saskatoon, which was limited to just three hits through the first six innings by starter Patrick Freese, then relief man Willie the Turk White Shoes Heiser, put together four hits in the top of the seven to score an insurance run.
Catcher Mike Latta, like Andrews, did not seem to mind the shift from metal to wood for this game and was three-for-three at the plate. Andres, meantime, finished with two doubles in three at bats.
