Flippen’s one-hit pitching stops Jamestown in game three
Brandon Flippen threw a one-hit, 2-0 shutout Saturday night over Post 14 (Jamestown) in Jack Brown Stadium for Post 334 in game three of the Jamestown tournament.
Flippen threw 99 pitches and worked out of two late-inning jams with help from his defense, nearly had a no-hitter. In fact, he lost it in the fifth inning when a soft infield chopper was not cleanly fielded by third baseman Joe Brinda behind the mound. Had Brinda been able to capture the ball in his glove, there was time to throw out the batter at first.
The Jamestown official scorer thought otherwise, however.
Despite that little setback of sorts, Brinda helped out in another way by launching a massive home run over the left field barrier at Jack Brown Stadium in the fourth inning, a solo shot that gave Post 334 its 2-0 advantage. He also scored the game’s first run in the second inning on Dougie Pouliot’s single up the middle and added another single in the sixth for a three-for-three day at the plate.
Prior to the game, Post 334 conducted its annual “Slow Man’s” race, a competition that was ultimately won by the team’s slowest runner Willie “The Turk White Shoes” Heiser. He was defeated in the final runoff by Flippen, the pre-event favorite to win the golden spike for slowest runner on the Post 334 team.
The team also broke out its special jerseys, a salute to war veterans. Post 334 teams have worn special jerseys for one game in this tournament since 1998 and have always come away victorious.
And finally, Brinda’s home run extended a streak dating back a quarter century of play in this tournament of at least one home run during the Jamestown weekend.
