The roller coaster continued, but…
On its final day of play in the 2009 Gopher Classic, the Post 334 team struggled in its fourth game, which became a 12-3 loss to the Rochester A’s, then played one of the tougher out-of-state teams, the Dickinson Roughriders, to the wall in eight innings before falling 5-2 in game five.
Walks — eight in the first inning — doomed Post 334 in the loss to the Rochester A’s. Post 334 fell behind 5-0 and never contended. In the second game, first-year pitcher Benny Roseth, who has been pitching this summer for the Coon Rapids VFW team, made his Post 334 debut and threw five scoreless innings and left the game with one out in the seventh with the game tied 2-2.
Roseth’s brilliant and timely boost to a beleaguered Post 334 pitching staff, was all for naught as Dickinson broke the 2-2 tie in the top of the eighth with a three-run, two-out home run over the short center field fence at Apple Valley. Post 334 threatened in the last of the eighth, but failed to score.
Earlier, however, Post 334 took a 1-0 lead in the the third when another rookie, Luke Hite sliced a double into the left-field corner. He moved to third on a pitch in in the dirt and on the same play scored when the catcher — trying to make a play — threw the ball into left field.
Post 334 fell behind 2-1 in the sixth, but tied the game on Ian Andrew’s two-out single to right that scored Devin Croal from third. Mike Latta, who was on second was also waved home, but a perfect Dickinson throw to the plate prevented Post 334 from taking a 3-2 lead into the seventh…
