An 0-and-3 start in the Classic
The Post 334 baseball team opened the Gopher Classic with three straight losses in its pool bracket at Legion Field in Apple Valley:
•4-0 to Plymouth, Indiana and 7-6 to Apple Valley Friday, July 9
•9-1 to Wayzata Saturday, July 10.
In the opening game, right-hander Alex Williams pitched two-hit baseball into the seventh inning, but trailed 1-0. In the top of the seventh he gave up another hit, a walk and a 3-run homer that took the chance of dramatic Post 334 come-from-behind victory out of the question.
In the second game, right-hander Ian Andrews spotted the host team Apple Valley a 4-0 lead in the first, but Post 334 came back and ultimately took a 5-4 lead. Andrews had a 2-run hit during the come back, then added a solo home run in the top of the seventh to tied the game 6-6 after Apple Valley had rallied to regain the lead [6-5] an inning before. In the last of the seventh, however, relief pitcher Will Heiser was victimized by his own error that put a runner on second base. And with two out, a ground-ball single up the middle allowed the runner from second to score just ahead of center fielder Jeremy Oakley’s strong throw to the plate.
In the third game, Post 334 fell behind early again, 4-0, but this time did not have a response against one of the top pitchers in the state, Johnson of Wayzata. Mike Latta did hit a solo home run, but that was the only threat Post 334 mounted in the decisive loss…
