A good return to league play
After a week in Rapid City against some of the nation’s top American Legion programs, the Post 334 team returned to local play in the North Hennepin League Tuesday night (July 7) and claimed a 5-3 win over Armstrong.
A 4-run first inning was the key to this win, a 4-run rally after the first two batters of the inning were put out. Consecutive singles by Billy Hirschi, Ian Andrews and Mike Latta netted one run, while walks to Jeremy Oakley and Trevor Daniels, which sandwiched an Armstrong error and a hit batter [Joe Brinda], produced the remaining three runs. A single run in the fourth thanks to wild pitch ultimately provided insurance, though at the time it made it 5-0.
It was insurance because Armstrong, which netted 12 hits in the game off Post 334 right-hander Hirschi, scored two in the fifth and one in the sixth, threatening to do more damage each of those innings. Will Heiser, the Crazy Legs fireman, came on in the seventh and closed out the game by setting the final three Armstrong batters of the game down in order.
