Post 334 opens defense of Gopher Classic title with back-to-back wins
The 2007 Gopher Classic champion, Post 334 of Coon Rapids, was off to a good start Friday (July 11) in defense of its title: two victories in its first two games.
And both by a single run — 2-1 over Eastview and 3-2 over West St. Paul.
Zac Sather was the key run-producer in both games. His solo home run in the fourth inning proved to be the game-winning run against Eastview. At the time it complemented Corey Johnson’s second-inning solo homer to give Post 334 and pitcher Brandon Baumgartner a 2-0 lead.
In the second game he drove in all three runs against West St. Paul. He had two-run double in the fifth to give Post 334 a 2-1 lead, then lofted a sacrifice fly in the top of the seventh to score Billy Hirschi from third with what proved to be the game-winning run.
Baumgartner, who struck out 14 was in charge during the first game, limiting Eastview to one hit through six innings. An error and back-to-back hits in the seventh led to Eastview’s lone run and an end to Baumgartner’s shutout.
Steve Sumo Schroer pitched into the seventh before giving way to Bill Hirschi, then Cody Beam, who ended by striking out the clean-up Eastview batter with bases loaded. Schroer scattered eight hits and struck out five during his tenure on the hill…
