Post 334 beats Regina, falls 2-1 to host Dickinson on tourney’s final day
After surviving a challenge from Regina, Saskatchewan 11-7, the Post 334 team took on one of North Dakota’s top American Legion teams, the Dickinson Roughriders, and fell 2-1.
The win and loss gave the team a 3-2 finish in the Jablonsky wooden bat tournament played at Dickinson’s Southside Park.
Zac Sather claimed the first game victory in relief, a game that was close until the seventh inning — 8-7. A three-run top-of-the-seventh rally by Post 334, a rally highlighted by Mike Latta’s two-run triple, provided the final cushion of comfort and four-run margin of victory.
In the second game — the tournament main event — Post 334’s Jordan Frogner hooked up with Dickinson’s Travis Tooley in a classic dual that lasted less than 90 minutes. Post 334 scored in the third when Billy Hirschi — with a fade away hands first, body-out slide — beat a relay throw home after a Dickinson mis-played ball at first base.
Dickinson tied he game in the fourth on a sacrifice fly, then took the lead with two out in the fifth thanks to a solo home run by Tooley. It was only one of four hits Frogner gave up to Dickinson, while Post 334 collected seven off Tooley.
In all, Post 334 finished third in the tournament, while Latta and Corey Johnson were named to the all-tournament team…
